Oil on Birchwood Panel | 23.5″ x 17.5″
Ghostly white against the darkest hours of the night, Barn Owls are a contradiction. Their movements are
deathly silent to aid stealthy hunting, and yet their creamy white feathers so eye catching. Dancing plainly
against an inky sky. This contrast is what draws me back to them, time and again. It makes for a beautiful
finished artwork yes, but also an exciting process to paint. Placing the creamy whites against the black
background, creating sharp and fluffy shapes, with no hiding places for misjudged strokes. I have to have
my wits about me!
Perched on the remnants of a fence post, a perfect spot to keep watch for any tiny creatures moving
below. The last of the sunlight glowing through the wing feathers creating a bright orange glow. A deep
dignity in its poise, silent and still, the night sky reflected in its eyes. The silent hush it brings to every
movement has long been associated with spooks and spectres. But all I see is peace. A shepherd of quiet
calm, serene before the evenings work begins.
Painted from reference photography by Simon Litten
To create this painting, I’ve used my signature tool – a sword liner brush (typically reserved for
watercolours). Applying the layers of colour and texture using the wet-on-wet technique. Not waiting for
the layers to dry but pulling my brush through them while they’re still wet, creating clean, fine lines.
Painting small sections at a time, finishing each to completion before moving on to the next.
Painted on a Birch wood panel, and finished with a protective layer of gloss varnish. Framed in an exclusive
hand-built moulding, with gold inlay. Designed to accentuate without detracting or distracting.
All materials used are vegan and cruelty-free.
