Oil on Birchwood Panel | 17″ x 21″

My favourite part of any painting is the eyes, and if I find myself drawn to a more unusual subject, it
usually means it has interesting eyes. And they don’t come more striking than these deep warm pools of
amber!
I often take some artistic license, never changing what is anatomically correct, but playing with the
highlights, direction of the gaze, building the character and expression. I used to love painting them first,
having that instant connection with the animal as I applied the details. But now I find myself painting the
eyes as I naturally come to them, usually towards the end, and it gives me such a boost to see it come
alive!
Painted from reference photography by Jon Hawkins
To create this painting, I’ve used my signature tool – a sword liner brush (typically reserved for
watercolours). Applying the layers of colour and texture using the wet-on-wet technique. Not waiting for
the layers to dry but pulling my brush through them while they’re still wet, creating clean, fine lines.
Painting small sections at a time, finishing each to completion before moving on to the next.
Finished with a protective layer of varnish. Framed in an exclusive hand-built moulding, with gold inlay.
Designed to accentuate without detracting or distracting. All materials used are vegan and cruelty-free.
