Overview

An exhibition of original paintings by

Edward Brian Seago RBA RWS (1910 – 1974)

Edward Seago was among the most admired and commercially successful British landscape painters of the twentieth century. Born in Norwich in 1910, Seago was largely self-taught, developing a highly individual style distinguished by its atmospheric handling of light, weather and landscape. Working fluently in both oil and watercolour, he became celebrated for evocative depictions of the East Anglian coast and countryside, London street scenes, harbours, rivers, snow scenes and continental subjects, particularly Venice.

Early encouragement from Sir Alfred Munnings helped shape Seago’s artistic direction, although his vision remained distinctly his own. As a young man he travelled extensively with touring circuses throughout Britain and Europe, producing a body of work that revealed both technical confidence and a sensitivity to transient effects of movement and light. These formative experiences informed a lifelong interest in observation from life and direct plein-air painting.

During the Second World War, Seago served in the British Army, initially in camouflage and later as an official war artist. His wartime experiences in Europe and the Middle East deepened the atmospheric and emotional character of his work. Despite persistent ill health throughout his life, he maintained an extraordinarily productive career and achieved remarkable popularity during the 1950s and 1960s, when exhibitions of his work frequently sold out on opening day.

Seago enjoyed a close association with the British royal family, particularly Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who became an important patron and collector of his paintings. In 1956 he accompanied Prince Philip aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia on its Antarctic voyage, producing a distinguished series of paintings that are regarded among the finest achievements of his career.

Elected to the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), Seago remains celebrated for his ability to capture the changing moods of the British landscape with elegance, immediacy and restraint. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Royal Collection, the Imperial War Museums and major regional museums throughout the United Kingdom.
